Naked Idol

21/07/2014

Naked Idol is a band who's inspired by other metal bands: "it’s a hybrid of bands like KISS, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Alice In Chains, WASP, Alice Cooper and Stone Temple Pilots". The 1st line-up of Naked Idol was formed in 2006 but the music style was totally different. It was around 2009 that they started playing this kind of rock. They released their first album "Filthy Fairies" in 2013. The band is formed by a bassist, a singer, a guitarist and a drummer.

This group was originally planned for just being a hobby but it turns out that the project became bigger after a few years and there were many changes in the members of the band too. They wanted to share their music. They were able to create their own music style inspired by other groups from several kinds of metal.

In order to gain notoriety, they released 2 singles. One named "Shattered" and a cover of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer". These 2 singles have succeeded in attracting the attention of many fans.

Now going to their EP released in late 2013 called "Filthy Fairies". The choice out of the 5 tracks is justified, it is easier for a new group to only show a small part of what they do and to let the fans make a personal opinion on the overall atmosphere of the album and the group. If I may give an opinion, I find it a rather dark atmosphere with songs that tell their own story.

Let's talk about the Deluxe edition of the EP, we also receive a plectrum and a condom in addition to EP. A touch of originality and humor, because it's actually not in every Deluxe edition that we get these little "gifts". On the box of the condom we read "Release the Fairies"... a way to show they can be serious when it's about their music or their work on the EP, but they also know to have some humor. Magnum also gives us a second justification "In the end of the day it's only rock n 'roll ..."

To conclude this, Naked Idol is a group that deserves to be recognized for managing to create a clean atmosphere and having a lot of fans who want to continue to listen what they do. And waiting for another EP! And surely after.... a concert?

The introduction done, let’s talk a bit more in detail about “Filthy Fairies” and why not song after song.

  • Shattered : First song of this EP. It begins with the siren that I hear once in a month at work (when they do a test) the ones who are supposed to attract attention when in reality most of the people don’t do attention to BUT it’s followed by the best way to attract my attention………bass baby and that followed by drums. That intro suddenly becomes 10.000 times better (I know I’m very subjective here). Malcom did a great job with it and it’s one of the typical songs where during a gig you will sing along with it. I can already imagine the crowd singing “shatterrrrrr…”.You will keep that song in your head for some days, be sure of that
  • Hungry (For you) : The song begins with a little scream what makes me mind on someone about who we will talk later. Malcom lets us see here that he can sing rock and ballads. Maybe that the condom had to do with that song as that one is sung in a sensual way, it can have some effects. But no worries, it is sung in a rock way. The guitar solo also gives a nice pause in it.
  • Filthy Fairies : Ah, the scream is back but oh wait, this time it’s done by the one I just talked about….Mr Lordi (I doubt it’s needed that I say from which band he’s the singer) . Both vocals were recorded at a different time and I’m even not sure that Malcom was already in the band when the part of Mr Lordi got done but let me tell you that both voices fit very great together. When that duo live on stage ?
  • Jane : The intro of the song makes me mind on those toys we use for calming a baby and my first reaction was “oh a ballad” but in reality the tempo changes and, even it never becomes heavy, I shouldn’t call it a ballad. Somewhere it’s even a song hard to categorize. You have a lot of different tempos and voice volumes. Pretty interesting
  • Devil Ridin’ Shotgun : Last song of the EP is also one of my favorites. The intro is great, all instruments are a pleasure for our ears. When it’s about drums, it is clearly the song I prefer simply because it fits with Malcom’s voice without being too much, just like they are one. The guitar solo here is also great and like with “Hungry (For you)” it makes a nice pause. It makes that, even a song is a sort of repetition, it doesn’t become boring. If seeing that one live, I would hesitate between enjoying the guitar or the singing too but for sure I won’t be able to do it without moving

I will resume with saying that if you like rock n’ roll, that EP is a good investment
