Alavala

Created in 2008, ALAVALA is one of those bands who have something different. It's a band to discover for sure and it's exactly what we tried to do with this interview.

Terve,

Kiitos for letting us interview you. Let's begin with discovering a bit more about the band. How did everything start ? What's the story of the band ?

We actually started as a duo with Masi, but quickly realized we wanted to play as a band. That´s when my dear friend Noora and Tyko (an old mate of Masi) joined us. Tyko left the band after few years and today we are a trio.

Some of the people who will read this interview don’t know your music. What can you say for giving them desire to discover you ?

Hahaha, this is hard. Our next album, Minuntai will be in finnish and it´s semi-acoustic, a little bit folk oriented album.. But the previous one Secret Whale was something completely different. One could say Alavala is evolving.

Your first full-length album “Secret Whale” was published in 2012. Tell us more about it. What was the atmosphere you wanted to give on it ?

Secret Whale has its roots in american music, grunge and all that. It sounds like the music I´ve been listening my whole life. It´s our first full-length album and we took our time making it. It sounds like the four of us.. as we were back then.

If you need to choose one in all the songs you made, which one would it be and why ?

It would be one of the finnish songs I´ve written for the upcoming album. Maybe Pahalle Nimi which is the first single. It has a beautiful haunting vibe in it. The atmosphere is sad and hopeful at the same time.

What are your plans for the future ?

Our second album Minuntai will be out 3rd october this year. We´re really looking forward to it and waiting for the gigs!

If someone will come to see you live, what kind of show will he/she see ?

Multiple instruments, beautiful vocals and a weird, dark mood that we somehow create playing live.

If you want to recommend some Finnish artists to discover, who would they be ?

What a great question. I should probably think about it for a few days, but I´m gonna say Apulanta (a legendary band still going strong) and YUP (twisted music, but sadly they don´t make music anymore).

Thank you for giving us some of your time. Is there a last word you want to say ?

Enjoy the summer! In Finland there´s finally warm and the sun is shining after a horrible june when it was actually snowing in midsummer. We have a short summer here north, but we love it even more!
