Silene

02/09/2014

Silene is a Finnish gothic rock band formed in 2004. They’re rocking the traditional gothic rock but they also include pop, punk and classical music in it. This band is a fresh breath in that musical genre, still very popular in Finland.

Members:

Katinka – Vocals

Toby – Guitars

Antti – Bass

Nauku – Keyboards

Otto – Drums

The band was founded in 2004, thanks to its members and their musical background, going from Two Witches (see the review on the site) to Suruaika and Romales. In the early years of the band, back then a Siouxsie And The Banshees cover band, they played a lot of successful gigs. Before such responses from the crowd, they continued so and slowly began to write and compose their own songs. As result, their first EP “107 Raven Road” got released in 2006 and was very well received by the public. Silene ceased to be a cover band, becoming an unique band with its own inspiration and words.

In 2007, after a series of concerts in Finland, they played with Two Witches on the 20th anniversary concert of the band and again success was there to welcome Silene. Quickly after, the band was to be spotted in Tampere at the Cosmic Studio to record their second EP “In The Middle”. It got released in 2008. Again, the EP but also their live sessions received a good feedback via social networks.

Silene’s reputation took a great step forward in 2010 when they got invited to play at the Lumous Festival, a well known gothic themed event held each year in Tampere, Finland. There they performed some new songs, along with the ones of the EP’s. The audience welcomed those songs very well and the gig was a success. However, after the festival, Silene witnessed the departure of one of his founding members, Heky. The band then found Antti, its current bassist. Later, and for the whole year of 2011, Silene was locked in the studio, brewing their first album.

In 2012, the drummer of the band, Pawel, left the band for personal reasons while the album was still in production. He got replaced by Otto, who is still in the band today. In June, Silene’s first album “All Our Yesterdays” was released through Secret Entertainment. A release party followed, along with more gigs in Finland, including the Redemption Festival. The album got reviewed and received positive feedback!

2013, a quiet year for the band. Some of their songs, including the newest song “You”, got featured in compilation albums such as Gothic Visions IV and Pohjola. A few gigs took place.

Things got shaken again in 2014 when Silene unveils a new single, “Unseen Memories” in May, along with a video clip. It got well received by the audience and shows a certain improvement in Silene’s music. The latest activity of the band was in June with a gig in Tampere.

The first releases of Silene were full of promises and those have been fulfilled with their latest work. The band settled in their own unique style, bringing a new point of view on Finnish gothic rock. I recommend listening to All Our Yesterdays with its gems which are “Liberty (Evil Inside)” and “Allure”. The lyrics have no real messages but are coming from moods, past and future, life itself and it gives a nice and unique touch to the music style of the band. Silene keeps the gothic scene alive and we can expect they’ll continue to.
